Where Lakes Meet the Sea
Results

By the end of the project, students had gained a clearer understanding of the relationship between coastal lakes and the Black Sea. They were able to explain how lakes such as Tekirghiol, Siutghiol, Tașaul, and Tăbăcărie were formed, how they changed over time, and why they were important for both biodiversity and human communities. Through fieldwork and classroom activities, students developed practical skills in observation, mapping, and simple water testing, and they experienced first-hand how environmental research is carried out. They identified key species of birds, fish, and plants, and understood how local ecosystems were linked to larger marine systems. Students also became aware of the human impacts on these fragile environments, such as pollution, urbanization, and tourism, and reflected on the ways communities could both harm and protect them. By connecting their findings to the principles of Ocean Literacy, they recognized that what happened in these small lakes influenced the wider Black Sea, and ultimately the global ocean. As a final outcome, students communicated their knowledge creatively, through posters, presentations, or digital projects, sharing their discoveries with peers and the community. This strengthened their teamwork and communication skills while raising awareness about local environmental issues. Overall, the project resulted in students becoming more environmentally responsible citizens, equipped with the knowledge, curiosity, and motivation to care for coastal and marine environments.
