Water quality
Results

We produced a database with the physicochemical characteristics of drinking water across multiple locations in Constanța and nearby areas. Significant variations were observed between sampling points, particularly in parameters such as nitrates, conductivity, TDS, and metal concentrations, indicating localized influences on water quality.

In some locations, elevated levels of nitrates and nitrites suggested possible contamination from agricultural activities or infiltration from surrounding environments. Variations in pH and oxidation-reduction potential highlighted differences in water stability and potential corrosivity within the distribution network. Increased conductivity and TDS values in certain areas indicated higher mineral content, which may affect both taste.

The comparative analysis allowed for the identification of areas with relatively stable and compliant water quality, as well as zones requiring attention and potential intervention. For example, reverse osmosis systems were identified as effective for reducing high TDS and nitrate levels, while activated carbon filters were suitable for improving taste and removing organic contaminants.

This project offered students valuable practical and academic benefits, like gaining hands-on laboratory experience, including water sampling and analysis of key physicochemical parameters such as pH, conductivity, TDS, nitrates, and metals, that helped students better understand how theoretical concepts are applied in real-world situations.

Students also developed important analytical and critical thinking skills by interpreting data and comparing results from different locations. This improved their ability to identify patterns, assess water quality, and draw conclusions. The project strengthened teamwork and communication skills, as students worked collaboratively on data collection, analysis, and reporting. They also gained experience in scientific writing and presenting results in a structured manner. The project increased students’ awareness of environmental and public health issues, while providing practical experience that is highly relevant for future careers in science, engineering, and environmental fields.
