3D reefs
Goal
The goal of this project is to develop and implement biomimetic artificial reef systems that enhance benthic biodiversity and ecosystem resilience along the Romanian coast of the Marea Neagră. By combining ecological principles with advanced technologies such as 3D modeling, additive manufacturing, and satellite data integration, the project aims to create efficient, scalable, and environmentally sustainable solutions for habitat restoration. A central objective is to improve the availability and quality of hard substrates necessary for the establishment of biofilm, microphytobenthos, and higher trophic levels, ultimately supporting marine food webs. The project seeks to reduce the impacts of coastal degradation, including erosion, biodiversity loss, and reduced ecological productivity. Through experimental validation and field-oriented design, the initiative contributes to nature-based solutions aligned with climate adaptation strategies. The long-term vision is to provide a transferable model for artificial reef deployment that can be adapted to different coastal environments, supporting both ecological restoration and socio-economic benefits such as sustainable tourism and fisheries enhancement.
