Crawford Art Gallery – Iordache Bogdan

If you travel to Cork, Ireland, you must visit Crawford Art Gallery, one of the most beautiful places in town. On the outside, you will find a big old building made of bricks. Poza

Inside you will be surprised by a lovely room with tall blue walls and a friendly guide. By the left, you will see the sculpture gallery. There are some impressive structures known as the Canova Casts. The statues were made in Rome under the supervision of Antonio Canova, the leading Neoclassical sculptor of his time. The Canova Casts were commissioned in 1816 by Pope Pius VII as a gift of gratitude for the United Kingdom’s role in defeating Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. In my opinion, these are the attraction points of the art gallery. My favourite sculptures were Apollo Belvedere and Laocoön and his sons because of the details and the complex backstory.

As you go forward, you will find yourself in the lower gallery: a room full of photographs and paintings mostly made by local artists. The collection is gorgeous and it changes very often. I was shocked by a well-made painting that was combining the old form of art with the new one.

At the ground floor you can also have a great meal. Moving onto the first floor I saw the Long Room and the Penrose Room. Two rooms which are dedicated to the ancient art form.

At the second floor, the Modern Galleries, the Screening Room and the Harry Clarke are waiting for visitors. Harry Clarke was a significant Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator. Some of his pieces are displayed in his room.

The Crawford Art Gallery is definitely the perfect place to learn some new things about the Irish culture!
