Kavala – Ancient Walls and Modern Tourism
Located in northern Greece, Kavala is a coastal city that beautifully combines its ancient past with a modern look. One of the city's most iconic landmarks is the Kavala Fortress, majestically built on top of the hill, offering a truly beautiful view of the Aegean Sea and the entire city.
Built during the Byzantine period and expanded by the Ottomans, the fortress served as a strategic military stronghold for centuries. Its thick stone walls, watchtowers, and battlements are a reminder of Kavala’s long and complex history. Today, the fortress stands as a symbol of the city, attracting thousands of tourists each year who come to explore its narrow pathways, climb its towers, and imagine life in medieval times.
I was especially attracted to the panoramic view from the top, where the past meets the present. From here, one can see the old aqueduct, the port, and the vibrant modern city, all in one glance. In summer, the fortress also hosts cultural events, such as concerts and theater performances, bringing a fresh energy to the ancient site.
Beyond the fortress, Kavala greeted me with its cobbled streets, colorful old houses, and relaxed seaside vibe. Whether you’re enjoying fresh seafood at a local tavern or exploring the nearby beaches, the city offers something for every traveler.
In my opinion Kavala is more than just a stop on a map, it’s a place where history lives on, where ancient walls continue to tell their stories, and where modern tourism thrives along with never ending beauty.
