Alistrati cave
During this Erasmus+ project we visited multiple natural sights, one of which was the Alistrate cave. The Alistrati cave lies about 6 km southeast of Alistrati’s town at a place called “Petroto”. The expanse of the area is almost 14.000 square meters. The antechamber of the cave is 8 m high. It’s from this point that different high galleries are fully decorated with stalactites and stalagmites.
The main branches of the cave are developed to the left and to the right of the entrance starting from a huge chamber, the Teception Chamber of a width of 60 m, a length of 100 m and height of 20-30m. It’s in this chamber that nature decided to demonstrate its power in creating ornaments. What fascinates the most is the huge stalactites and those pure white forming draperies. There are other chambers and their height is quite the same 8-10m.
I gathered the impressions of two of the other students that saw the cave. “I was very impressed by the cave. Although the stalactite and stalagmite structures were interesting in themselves, there were some that seemed to be subtly carved to embody scenes from the past. Although we were only shown a few of them, such as "the Stumps' house - a mushroom-shaped stalagmite", I could imagine many more things. And the fact that it takes so many years for these structures to come together and the fact that not all the chambers of the cave have been explored yet seems unbelievable to me.” is the way Maria describes it.
“My experience in the cave was one of genuine wonder and excitement. I'm happy that I got to learn historical facts such as bats having lived here before the cave became a tourist attraction. As well as the lake that used to run with water inside of the cave, I was really intrigued by the effects of gravity on the cave's formation as well.” is Ada’s opinion after visiting the cave.
