Vistonida Lake
Vistonida Lake was the first place we went to after getting to meet the Greek students at their school. When we got there, I did not know what to expect, I only knew that we were going to do some analysis on the water from the lake. We crossed a long wooden bridge which had some plants underneath it.
While looking towards the water in detail, I realised that there were some interesting species living in there and found out that that lake was rich in biodiversity. By talking to the Greek students, I have learned that not many of them visited that place, even though it was not that far from the place where they lived and an answer to that is because that place is not that well-known in their area.
Something I found intriguing was that there was a church at the end of the bridge and my curiosity led me to entering it. It was pretty small, but it has a really nice cultural story behind. Apparently, from afar, this church seems to be floating on the lake, from what I have heard from students.
Our main purpose was to do some analysis on the water. We had already learned the process and we had taught the Greek students step by step, which was a great way to interact with them. The salinity appeared to be higher than expected and that was when we had found out that the lake was connected to the sea, which is also a factor for the rich biodiversity.
Visiting Vistonida Lake was a unique mix of science, nature, and friendship. Working with Greek students and exploring the lake’s ecosystem made learning meaningful and reminded me how powerful shared experiences can be.
