An image worth 1000 words
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but this one feels worth even more. Taken in a spontaneous moment, it captures a memory that words alone struggle to describe. In the photo, a group hug brings together two worlds: us and our new friends from Greece. It was taken during our final goodbyes on the Erasmus exchange trip in Xanthi, where we met an amazing group of Greek high school students who welcomed us with open arms.
What began as a school project quickly grew into something much more meaningful. The Greek students were incredibly kind and made us feel at home from the very beginning. They didn’t just show us around Xanthi, they shared their lives, their culture, and their dreams. We explored the streets, discovered the beauty of the area, learned about traditions, and enjoyed meals that turned into long and joyful conversations.
The group hug captured in the photo came after a special moment. We had written a few thank-you letters for them after they gave us some local sweets. In return, they started writing personal messages for each of us on napkins they found at the restaurant where we were having our final meal together. After everyone exchanged letters and napkin notes, the hug happened naturally. It wasn’t posed or planned, it just felt right.
Though we didn’t spend a lot of time with the students from Xanthi, the memories and friendships will last a lifetime. And in that single image, every emotion, every laugh, and every story comes flooding back.
