Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Greek Educational System

Poza

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the largest and one of the most prestigious universities in Greece. Located in the city of Thessaloniki, it offers a wide range of academic programs across disciplines such as humanities, sciences, engineering, health sciences, and the arts.

Admission to undergraduate studies for Greek students is based on the national Panhellenic Examinations, a highly competitive process following the completion of secondary education. International and EU students can apply through special procedures using equivalent qualifications. Students must complete the Lyceum (upper secondary school) and choose an academic orientation group (e.g., Science, Humanities, etc.) in their final years. They are examined in 4 main subjects, and their total score determines which university and department they can enter. Each department at AUTH has a minimum required score, which varies from year to year based on demand and difficulty. Foreign students can apply via a separate admissions process through the Hellenic Ministry of Education.

Undergraduate programs typically last four years, although some disciplines, such as medicine and engineering, may require five or six years. Studies combine theoretical courses, seminars, laboratory work, and examinations. Postgraduate programs include Master's and Doctoral studies, with a focus on advanced specialization and research. Some programs are also offered in English, especially for international students.
