Green Ideas - Using photobioreactors for pollution mitigation

The goal of our project is to create an experimental photobioreactor to be used in order to cultivate microalgae (mainly phytoplankton), to fix CO2 and N oxides from the gases resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels, but also to treat wastewater. Thus, greenhouse gas emissions reaching the atmosphere are reduced and photosynthesis is stimulated, which is the basis for the production of algal biomass, which can later be used to extract substances useful in pharmacology, for the production of biodiesel and bioethanol, or can be used as fertilizer. Objectives of the projectCarrying out several sets of experiments to indicate the optimal values of biotic and abiotic parameters in the construction of a photobioreactorRealization of a functional photobioreactor, which uses sea water and fresh water respectivelyAutomating the operation of the photobioreactor by using an Arduino microcontrollerDesigning a use of a system of photobioreactors adapted to the built urban environmentThe students in the project team developed and designed the experiments and create the website in order to present their results. They attended several visits, one of this at Romanian Research Marine Institute and to the Naval Academy. The project has been presented in many occasion, in school, as well as for the local educational institutions, during our Erasmus and Probleu project meetings, to the students from other cities from Romania (Brasov, Iasi, Bucuresti), for a total of aprox 150 students that have been in contact with our project.
